Swap n' Pepper

UX/UI Case Study

Project Overview

Nowadays, more individuals are adopting different food lifestyles for a variety of reasons (e.g. allergies, health, taste preferences, sustainability, etc.) Companies are following this trend by developing new products for these diversifying diets. Swap n' Pepper helps people easily find ingredient substitutions for recipes to fit their needs. Specifically, it will suggest substitutions based on different user restrictions/preferences (e.g. plant-based, soy allergy, low cholesterol, etc.), as well as any combination of these categories. These suggestions will include detailed information such as differences in the eating experience (taste, smell, look, and texture), nutritional changes, brand comparisons, and user reviews based on their personal experience using this substitution.

Background

Most people have some type of dietary restriction for a variety of reasons, be it medical, personal or simply taste preferences. Finding the right substitute for an ingredient that has the attributes they want and/or need (as well as knowing how to use it) can be challenging.

Through survey and user interviews, we discovered that the majority of people with food restrictions do use some form of food substitution, and more than half of that group mentioned they want the outcome to be as close to the main dish as possible when it comes to taste and texture.

How might we create a product that could help people experiment with alternative ingredients and feel confident and happy with the result?

Solution

We have created an app that has three main functions:

  • First, to easily find customizable recipes that fits an individual’s needs.
  • Second, to educate them on suitable substitutions
  • Third, to provide assurance of what they should expect in the resulting dish.
